Like a colorful palette, the various wood scraps lay before me, provided by a local shipyard. The portrait was intended to measure 1 meter and 30 centimeters in height upon completion. At first, I was given a photo of my classmate to use as the basis for my project. I began by sketching and developing the best method to create depth, using Photoshop for assistance. Afterwards, I heavily abstracted and clustered the photo in Adobe Illustrator, translating it into six levels of brightness. I transferred the contours onto the baseboard using a grid. Then, I began: pieces of wood were positioned, shifted, discarded, and glued.
